Powers/Abilities: In combat, he mainly uses the bow gauntlet strapped to his right arm to fire arrows upon his opponents.
Samurai Warriors characters are able to utilize a type of energy known as 'musou'. The original game is a hack-and-slash game, this energy allows for characters to shield, perform feats that would normally be impossible in realistic combat scenarios such as summoning energy waves and manipulating elements. Musou also allows characters such as himself to perform an equivalent of a limit break called a musou attack, where a temporary state of invulnerability is granted, ending with a powerful attack. Motonari's is the rapid firing of arrows from a fixed position, before firing three bomb arrows that explode in an area before him.
For Motonari in particular, it is the ability to fire multiple arrows from his bow gauntlet without the need to reload, ranging from three at one time to volleys of them. He can also channel briefly to enchant his arrows with additional properties. Such properties include enhanced piercing ability, arrows that lower enemy offense or defense when they are struck by them, explosive arrows as well as enchanting them with a 'reaper (also known as dark or slay)' element that has the ability to instantly kill basic soldiers in the game and deal additional percentage-based damage to officers' health; this can be interpreted as arrows enchanted with dark energy to deal enhanced damage to living beings.
Musou can also be used to project a temporary shield. It can safely guard him from physical and magical-based attacks for a short while, but too many hits will cause the shield to break. He will be stunned momentarily and cannot resummon another for a while.
Spirit is another type of energy that is accumulated through fighting foes. The spirit gauge consists of five orbs, and can be expended one by one to break the guards of officers, to evade attacks or when all five are filled, to evoke a state known as 'Gokui'. In Gokui state, characters are temporarily invulnerable for about 12 seconds, and musou attacks used in the gokui state become a single powerful strike, but cause the character to exit gokui state immediately. Motonari's takes the form of a dense volley of arrows from his gauntlet. However, spirit is gained very slowly through the course of battle.
For non-combat, his intellect is his greatest strength. Motonari is able to think of effective, foolproof strategies to solve problems by analyzing the area and people around him given sufficient time and information. He is also well-versed in trickery, able to lie convincingly to others by manipulating his tone, choice of diction and body language, though he abstains from it most of the time.

The Mouri clan rose from water.
The Seto Inland Sea was where they rose from. A proud navy of experienced sailors, some former pirates even, riding the waves with skills passed down from father to son. Motonari rode the waves himself. The calm ones on a sunny day to the Itsukushima Shrine as a young adult to pray to the resident gods, the raging ones on a storm to the same shrine to fight an impossible battle. Because he changed the flow, his enemies called him a god. He did not want to drown, and he knew how not to. He does not get killed because he knows how not to get killed. Because he was not the one who got killed, the lands and waters of Chugoku was his.
Lately he feels like he has returned to water. Every footstep felt heavy, as if he was wading. His mind swims, but he remembers all the battles. He records it all down with flowing strokes, black ink running down the pages like seaweed washed upon beach shores, forming tangled and compact characters. He does not forget the memories in black and white.
Itsukushima. Gassan-Toda. At Aga they faced off against the Oda troops. The Oda troops with their strategists Hanbei and Kanbei under Hideyoshi. They had superior numbers. So did the Amago when they marched onto Koriyama Castle. So did Sue Harukata when they clashed upon the sacred island. They sailed through the stormy seas with the help of the pirates. Mouri Motonari, Mouri Takamoto and Kikkawa Motoharu attacked from the rear while Kobayakawa Takakage led the initial attack on Miyao Castle. A pincer attack. Many drowned when they escaped the island. Takamoto and Motoharu was with him. The ships. Their ships. Ships in a naval battle at Kizugawaguchi. The initial assault against the Oda fleet when they clashed with Kobayakawa Takakage. Takakage split the force into two and circled around the Oda fleet, setting them aflame with cannon fire. He was there. Takamoto and Motoharu were not. Takakage basks in the glory of victory. He watches proudly in the rear. It was the year 1576. Fourth year of Tensho. The spirit of Hyakuman Isshin was strong. Did he ever tell the story of the Siege of Kouzuki?
Sometimes he swam when he was young. He would lie down in the stream. The sunlight was warm as it shone down upon him, the water in the stream would flow past his bristly hair. It would ripple once when he dips his brush in the water bowl to clean them, and water would swirl as Sugi no Ookata urged him to get up so he can take a sip as he lies on the straw mat with a fever. He does not feel straw but soft cotton, and Sugi no Ookata is Takamoto.
Takamoto, are you crying again?
Takamoto says he is not Takamoto, but he is sobbing. He feels water in his eyes. They looked so much like each other, father and son. Terumoto lowers the cup. Motonari is sinking. It was painful to swallow. He feels the absence of the brush in his hand. He needs to clean his brush.
Do you want to hear a story?
He needed a book. Motoharu yells, and Takakage dashes. He remembers, he does not need a book to tell stories because he remembers. He does not need arrows to break and bundle to tell that lecture, but Takamoto is missing. Was he not sitting by his bed with his weepy voice?
Takakage returns with a blue one, the blue one with the river-swirl pattern on the cover. Which one was it again, the fourteenth or the forty-ninth? He reads, but the feeling of sea water in his throat comes back. He doesn't taste the saltiness, but he feels the pain. He coughs loudly like last time and the times before.
Half of the page is white. Incomplete. Takakage is helping him hold the book. He struggles to decipher the swirls and splotches on the non-empty half. Motonari had to write. He had to wash his brush and dip it in ink and write continue it so that he could continue his lecture with the example of the Guandu battle in the Warring Kingdoms in China...

Mindset: Motonari remembers the events of his death, though he will be startled at the afterlife being nothing like whatwhat he perceives. He is extremely curious to know of the state of the world after his death, how history recorded the people he knew. The system will pique his interest highly, and he will desire to learn everything about it, as well as the people in the system as well. With him not having to worry about the clan's survival, many concerns that once applied to him are now inexistent. He is now free to learn about the world around him, all the history that can find and spend more quality time with Takakage that he might have missed out when they were alive.
G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡:
Normally Motonari is extremely calm and placid. Death and the like do not disturb him easily, since he came from a time of war. Having a logical nature, most problems that disturb many others would not shake him that easily. What is able to disturb him is mostly personal issues that he does not share with many others.
-Though he has seen plenty of people come and go, the death of his family hurts him extremely. Despite it not being mentioned in the game, Motonari is a widower. His beloved wife, known as Myokyu (posthumously, her real name remains unknown, but a popular conjured name is Lady Mii), died early from illness. The extent of his love for her can be seen in him refusing to take concubines when she was alive, even when it was common among many other samurai lords. His eldest son Takamoto also died prematurely from being poisoned on a military campaign, and is a reason why he refused to expand his territory to all of Japan to avoid sacrificing the lives of his family. Why he and Takakage are the only ones here in the system and not his family disturbs him, and finding a way to reunite with them will become a potential goal.
-Takakage being the only family member here along with him will cause him to be very protective of him. Any possible harm that comes upon him will cause him to fret greatly, and he will not take kindly at all to anyone who tries to do so. Having seen Takakage's older brother Takamoto pass away early, a tragedy that he feels hard to forget and also responsible for. This he does not want to see repeated with Takakage.
-While Motonari was willing to get his hands dirty to accomplish his plans, it also causes a sense of mental isolation to dwell within him. If he does not have a person to play the role of a morality anchor for him, he will continue to commit morally questionable deeds without remorse.
IC Information
Name: Mōri Motonari
Canon: Samurai Warriors 4 (Some canon material is taken from his earlier appearances in Samurai Warriors 3 and Warriors Orochi 3)
Gender: Male
Age: 65. To others, he would look younger if took on his Samurai Warriors 3 appearance, where the goatee is missing and his hair is black.
History: Wiki (Any unclear details can be elaborated on)
Personality: Mouri Motonari is a highly intelligent man with a calm demeanor. He appears to be have a constant sluggishness to him, and seems to have a vapid aura, but once he goes in battle, he instantly and drastically changes to take on the role of an exceptional commander of his armies, coming up with highly-efficient strategies to defeat his opponents. However, he still keeps a relaxed and gentle disposition, even when facing daunting odds or unlikable situations. He is educated, but due to being born in the last few years of the 15th century, he tends to be old-fashioned.
His beginnings were rough, with his mother dying early and eventually his father Mouri Hiromoto and and elder brother Okimoto too to alcohol poisoning. His early years were lived in squalor, with his adoptive mother, Sugi no Ookata. As such, he is not too fond of alcohol even in adulthood, the substance being able to blur one's judgmental ability which is crucial for a strategist such as himself, and he has no plan to follow in their footsteps. Frugality is also a virtue that he practices, and most of his pleasures that he indulges in are simple like reading.
The Mouri clan which he belongs to started as a minor clan in the middle of the Chuugoku Region, surrounded by many other minor clans and major clans, mainly being the Ouchi to the east and Amago to the north. Even his position as clan head was originally not meant to be his, but rather inherited after his older brother and young nephew's deaths. Over time and through many battles fought, the Mouri became the dominant clan in the region, holding ten provinces in their name. His shrewdness and sharp wits allows him to overcome overwhelming odds through precise calculating, anticipating his opponents' actions and forming counter-strategies to secure his goals. Back in his time, it was even said that he was the greatest strategist of all the land. The Battle of Itsukushima was his most well-known victory, where he managed to defeat Sue Harukata, a rival general despite his own army of 4000-5000 being outnumbered by the enemy army of 20000-30000 troops through the use of deception and a pincer attack, suffering minimal losses while the Sue army was routed.
The time of the Warring States where he lived back then had many local warlords pitting against each other for power and control over the land. For the sake of self-preservation, he is willing to resort to underhanded tricks and questionable means to carry his plans through. Motonari will not hesitate to use others as sacrifices or pawns as well, even if it means sullying his name, though he will feel slight guilt, but if someone dear to him was hurt, the guilt will be stronger with accompanying sadness. If there are alternative plans that can avoid excessive sacrifices, he is all-willing to take the alternative instead. He may be open to doing things of questionable morality, but only to achieve larger goals and not for the sake of evil.
It is frustratingly hard to break his calmness. Even when defeated, he does not show anger at his opponents or his allies, instead coming off as slight disappointment. People who outright show hatred at him also do not evoke any obvious negativity on his part, especially if they were victims of the plans he make. He was used to being portrayed in a negative light, especially with the alias of "Boushin", meaning Strategist God. Motonari sees it as a logical consequence for people who were hurt by his actions to pin their hatred on him, and he is willing to portray the role of 'villain' if needed, even if it does make him feel isolated.
To most people, he is polite and humble towards them. Motonari tends to give off the impression of being aloof, occasionally inscrutable, the former being more obvious when he is faced with issues that he is not interested in, which can be seen as him spacing out with a blank smile. However, he is perceptive and tends to able to read a person's intentions, figure out their personality and estimate their goals through observing their habits. He occasionally tests people by seeing their reactions to pre-conceived scenarios, which he plays out as mundane scenarios. Having insight on a person and one's surroundings gives him the ability to manipulate courses of actions, but he does not do so aggressively for selfish reasons, but will do so for a greater good. Back in his time, it was for the sake of long-lasting peace.
The study of history is his greatest joy, and he spends most of his time writing literary and historical works. However due to their intense verbosity, they do not appeal to most people except for his own son Takakage, a voracious reader who enjoys the verbal quantity, as well as his own bad penmanship. He claims to be a scholar himself, and shows genuine joy at being able to learn new knowledge, especially when it is related to the past. He also enjoys sharing knowledge with other people, especially through long lectures generously peppered with historical examples that rival his writing in verbosity; to the chagrin of some other people. In the game Warriors Orochi 3 where he had the chance to meet ancient Chinese figures from the Three Kingdoms as well as other mythological figures from Chinese and Japanese legends; including gods from both pantheons, he shows a near-childish delight in being able to observe them.
Motonari is always receptive to meeting new people and making new friends. He almost never fails to share the lecture of the Three Arrows with them, using the example of one arrow being easily broken while three together could not, talking about the importance of unity, which he coins as 'Hyakuman Isshin', meaning a million with one heart. He once shared the lecture with his three sons, Mouri Takamoto, Kikkawa Motoharu and Kobayakawa Takakage to teach them to cooperate with one another for the sake of strengthening the clan. It takes some time for him to warm up to people on a personal level, even when he does seem friendly initially, and he does this by occasionally testing them. For historical or influential figures, he naturally gravitates towards them due to curiosity and wanting to understand their intentions, sometimes coming off as eccentric. If he had to take down friends due to them being on opposing sides, he would genuinely feel sad. Such an incident happened in the Battle of Itsukushima, where he had to kill Hironaka Takakane, a general under the enemy Sue army that he bonded closely with. Takakane did not defect to join Motonari, nor did he inform Sue Harukata; the enemy general to avoid confrontation on Motonari's terms, leading Motonari to believe his death as a loyal Sue vassal was because their mutual understanding of each other could not allow both of them to exist together.
In direct combat, while he is experienced due to his age he is also not a profound fighter. In his own words, "I'm more of a thinker than a fighter", he prefers to uses plans and utilize the surroundings to defeat a particular foe.
While he can be shrewd, his own laid-back and good spirit are merely the other side of the coin. His good nature is no facade, and he does all that he can to ensure peace and harmony for the people he cares about. At the same time, such peace allows him to freely dabble in his hobbies of writing, recording and learning history. His greatest hope being to record great deeds; and hopefully have his own in the history of mankind.
He is symbolized by the characters 'harmony' (和) and 'perceive' (識) in the game.
